My favorite Tableau Community project - VFSG

Tableau Conference has come and gone. Now we need to be a little more creative to connect with our #DataFam until next May.

It is often recommended to improve our vizzing skills by participating in community challenges. There are many available:

  • Makeover Monday (although not currently active, it has tons of historical data sets to test your visualization skills)

  • Workout Wednesday

  • Real World Fake Data

  • Sports Viz Sunday

  • Iron Quest

  • Back 2 Viz Basics

  • Games Night Viz

You can find links to these and many more projects here.

The project near and dear to my heart is Viz for Social Good. If you want or need to practice your visualization skills or want to try your hand at an infographic, why not do it for a worthy cause?

Coincidentally, Viz for Social Good has a new project in the mix with Bridges to Prosperity. This organization has helped connect rural communities in Rwanda which has many positive effects on the population, their health, and economic prospects. This is the second project with Bridges to Prosperity which gives us a unique opportunity to see the impact of the first project and build on that. The focus of this project is the impact of their trailbridge building on climate change.

Information on the project can be found on the Viz for Social Good project page or better yet, sign up to be notified when a new project has started. Viz for Social Good has a great community to help you answer questions on the project or data and even a Slack channel to post questions.

Although the project started on June 10th, you still have plenty of time to compose a Viz and submit it by the project’s deadline of July 15th.

So go ahead and download the data to get started! It is a rewarding experience to participate and see the impact data viz can have to improve the world around us.

Don’t forget to register for the wrap-up event on July 23rd where Bridges to Prosperity will present information on the organization and how they will use your visualization ideas to further their cause.  It will also feature some vizzes from the community for the organization to use.

Happy Vizzing!
